The Company

BuildingWorks, Inc. (BWI) evolved as an outgrowth of Schwetye Architects, Inc. in 1997.  The firm offered the service of Property Condition Assessment, which surveyed and electronically documented conditions of the building, its systems, finishes and drawings.  At the time, architectural clients continually requested important information regarding their buildings and properties -- information that had been lost, misplaced, thrown away, physically changed or scattered among multiple persons and/or departments. Early on, BWI identified a critical need for a better way to catalog, store and access plans and “as-builts” drawings, equipment manuals, warranties and other pertinent building data into one easy-access repository.  Coupled with the knowledge that over 90% of the total lifecycle cost of the building comes after construction and during operations, it became apparent that an electronic system that would capture and retain the vital building information would be invaluable.  Thus, the idea of electronically storing this "single-source of information" in a searchable format was developed.  In 2004 our cornerstone software-driven report tool, now known as datasphere™, was launched to the market.

Leveraging very stable, existing technology, and with our experience in data management, BuildingWorks Inc. created electronic linked building information based on the understanding of three key points: first, information needs to be organized and accessed at the room or area level in which it resides; second, all information regarding the building’s contents are connected; and third, it had to be a “living document” system usable for the life of the building.  The understanding of these key points made it possible to create a true building information management system: saving building owners, contractors and property managers storage space, valuable time wasted in retrieval of documentation and (of primary importance) money.

The goal of BuildingWorks was (and still is to this day) to offer products and services that are easy to use, yet sophisticated enough to satisfy the information needs of the facility by providing it all "under one roof."

Today, BuildingWorks Inc. offers building owners a suite of powerful tools providing accurate, current, updatable and accessible electronic building information.  Each tool is portable and shared by building owners, facility managers and contractors to better manage the construction documents process and the building’s lifetime maintenance.  We can now chronicle a building’s complete life-cycle from conception through to demolition, minimizing the building’s life-cost. Our focus is to continue making improvements on our solution and to add other valuable services to complement our deliverables and the needs of our clients.
